Job Description

BelEve UK is an award-winning girls’ charity dedicated to inspiring the next generation of female leaders. We support girls and young women aged 8–22 across South East London through mentoring, leadership development, emotional wellbeing support, employability pathways and community programmes.

As we enter an exciting period of growth, we are seeking a Governance & Risk Management Trustee to join our Board and help strengthen our governance, risk management and organisational accountability.

Working alongside fellow trustees and the senior leadership team, you will provide strategic oversight, specialist knowledge and constructive challenge to ensure BelEve remains well-governed, financially responsible and compliant with its legal and regulatory obligations.

This is a strategic, non-operational position offering the opportunity to contribute to the long-term sustainability and impact of an organisation committed to empowering girls and young women.

Role & Responsibilities

As Governance & Risk Management Trustee, your key responsibilities will include:

Risk Management: Lead the Board’s oversight of BelEve’s Risk Register, reviewing the organisation’s risk management framework, risk appetite and mitigation strategies.

Governance: Support effective Board governance through annual skills audits, Board effectiveness reviews and oversight of governing documents, policies and procedures.

Regulatory Compliance: Seek assurance that BelEve meets its statutory and regulatory obligations, including requirements relating to the Charity Commission, Companies House, HMRC and data protection legislation.

Financial Oversight: Work alongside the Treasurer and Finance, Governance & Risk sub-committee to review management accounts, budgets, reserves, year-end reporting and audit arrangements.

Organisational Resilience: Ensure key organisational risks, including safeguarding, cybersecurity, business continuity and fraud prevention, are appropriately monitored and reviewed.

Strategic Decision-Making: Provide independent judgement, constructive challenge and evidence-based recommendations to support effective Board decisions.

Board Participation: Attend quarterly Board meetings and Finance, Governance & Risk sub-committee meetings, contributing actively to discussions and collective decision-making.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Criteria

Professional experience in governance, risk management, compliance, audit, assurance, finance, law, regulation or a related field.

Understanding of trustee responsibilities and the principles of effective governance.

Ability to interpret and critically assess financial information, including budgets, management accounts and reserves.

Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify organisational risks and provide constructive, evidence-based challenge.

Sound strategic judgement and the ability to maintain a clear distinction between governance oversight and operational management.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and inclusive approach.

A commitment to BelEve’s mission, values, safeguarding responsibilities and the empowerment of girls and young women.

Sufficient time and capacity to fulfil the responsibilities of the role.

Desirable Criteria

Previous experience as a charity trustee, non-executive director or in a similar governance position.

Relevant qualifications in governance, risk management, finance, audit, law or compliance.

Knowledge of charity finance, internal controls, audit processes or risk management frameworks.

Understanding of charity law, regulatory compliance, safeguarding governance, data protection, cybersecurity or business continuity.

Experience supporting growing organisations, particularly within the charity, education, youth or social impact sectors.

Awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing girls and young women in the communities BelEve serves.

Previous trustee or Board experience is not essential. We welcome applicants with transferable professional experience, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to our mission.
