Did you know that one in every seven children in the UK is lacking positive role models? And for those from underprivileged backgrounds, this statistic jumps to 21%, or in other words, a staggering 1 in 5 children.
But here is an incredible truth: role models have an enormous impact on shaping child and adolescent behaviour, both in school and in their relationships. By observing and imitating those they admire, children gain invaluable social skills and learn the values of self-love, awareness and respect in turn equipping them to make wiser decisions as they grow up.
That is why this week, we are beyond excited to kick off our Summer of Love campaign! It’s all about connecting young women with incredible female role models who are not only empathetic but strong, too.
Research shows us that inspirational role models can make such a difference but are particularly lacking in fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In the UK, black women face significant underrepresentation in the STEM workforce and education system, making it even harder for them to believe in their own potential. However, research has proven that when black women have access to black female role models, they experience a stronger sense of belonging and are more likely to excel in STEM-related subjects.
Therefore, we couldn’t contain our excitement when The Tallow Chandlers’ Company, an incredible organisation committed to nurturing young minds in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math, chose to back our cause.
Being a charity that empowers young women, our mission is to provide a variety of inspiring female role models from all fields, we do this through our mentoring programs, personal development and leadership workshops, and fantastic events for girls aged 8-22.
We believe that by instilling confidence and providing positive role models, we can help young girls unleash their true potential and take control of their own futures. The support from The Trust means everything to us, and we’re ready to put their support to good use!
