There’s a Champion in Every Girl – Just Look at Venus and Serena

As Wimbledon lights up our screens this summer, it brings more than just thrilling matches—it reminds us of the power of belief, dedication, and the right environment to grow.

Before Venus and Serena Williams were global champions, they were two young Black girls growing up in Compton, California, with a father who saw their potential before the world did. Richard Williams didn’t wait for the world to tell his daughters they were special—he showed them first. Through discipline, encouragement, and unwavering belief, he helped them step into a world that didn’t always make space for girls like them. And they didn’t just take part—they changed the game.

At BelEve, we see the same spark in every girl.

We believe that every girl is a champion in the making, and the journey begins long before she steps onto any stage, court, or platform. It starts with confidence. With creativity. With someone showing her that her voice, dreams, and leadership matter.

That’s the heart of our Summer of Dreams programme—a four-week camp for girls aged 8–15 that helps them explore who they are and who they can become. Through hands-on workshops, leadership sessions, and a supportive sisterhood, girls develop the tools to grow into confident, future-ready changemakers.

Why Does It Matter?

Because summer is more than just a break from school. It’s an opportunity to nurture your daughter’s self-esteem, stretch her imagination, and surround her with positive role models. And in a world where so many messages try to define what girls should be, we want to help them discover who they already are.

Tips for Raising a Champion (Even If She’s Not Holding a Tennis Racket)

You don’t need to be a sports coach or a celebrity parent to raise a confident, resilient daughter. Here are some practical ways to help unlock the champion in your girl:

  1. Celebrate Effort, Not Just Outcomes
Praise her for trying, experimenting, and learning—not just for getting things “right.” Confidence is built through progress, not perfection.
  2. Let Her Fail Forward
Mistakes are part of the growth journey. Help her see failure as feedback, not a flaw. Venus and Serena didn’t win every match—but they learned from every one.
  3. Encourage Her Voice
Whether it’s choosing dinner, speaking up in class, or sharing her opinions, giving her permission to express herself builds her sense of self-worth.
  4. Expose Her to Role Models
Representation matters. Introduce her to stories of women and girls breaking barriers in sports, STEM, politics, arts, and activism—especially those who look like her.
  5. Prioritise Positive Environments
The people she spends time with will shape her mindset. Make sure she’s in spaces where she’s uplifted, challenged, and safe to be herself.

That’s exactly what Summer of Dreams is designed to provide.
