What Zendaya Taught Me About Believing in Myself

A blog by a BelEve girl

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

Have you ever walked into a room and felt like everyone else got the memo except you? Like somehow, the version of you that showed up today just wasn’t… enough?

Yeah. Us too.

Here’s the thing, though: one of the most powerful women in entertainment felt that way too. And she didn’t fix it by becoming someone else. She fixed it by becoming more herself.

“Don’t try so hard to fit in, and certainly don’t try so hard to be different… just try hard to be you.” Zendaya

She didn’t shrink. She grew.

When I watch Zendaya, I’m not just watching an actress. I’m watching someone who decided, early on, that the world would have to make room for her, not the other way around.

She started on Disney, like plenty of others. But she didn’t stay in the lane she was handed. She went on to win Emmy Awards, produce her own projects, and build a career that she shaped on her own terms. Every single step of the way, she stayed completely, recognisably herself.

No shrinking. No performing a version of herself that would be easier for the world to swallow. Just… her. All of her.

And honestly? That hit differently than any award she’s ever won.

The world tells us a different story.

Growing up right now is a lot. Social media shows you a highlight reel of everyone else’s best moments, and somehow your brain starts to think that’s just… normal life. That everyone else is confident, sorted, and perfectly put together.

You hear things too. Maybe not out loud, but in the way spaces are set up, in whose stories get told, and in who gets to be centre stage. Messages that say, “Be quieter, aim smaller, and fit the mould.”

Zendaya is a direct contradiction of all of that. She is living, breathing, award-winning proof that those limits aren’t real. That confidence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about deciding your voice matters and showing up anyway.

This is what ‘Give to Gain’ really means.

We talk a lot about what girls need to ‘get’: opportunities, qualifications, and a seat at the table. And yes, those things matter.

But the most powerful thing anyone ever gave me wasn’t a door to walk through. It was someone who looked me in the eye and said, “You already have what it takes.”

That’s what Zendaya gives every time she shows up authentically. Every time she speaks about belonging. Every time she refuses to make herself smaller. She’s not just building her own career; she’s giving something to every girl watching who needed to see that it was possible.

Belief is contagious. When one girl gets it, she passes it on. That’s not a small thing. That’s how change actually works.

82% of girls experienced increased confidence after exposure to mentorship and role models who looked like them.

OECD Youth Studies, 2023

That number is not a coincidence. It’s what happens when a girl finally sees herself reflected back and her brain goes, “Oh. That could be me.”

At BelEve, we see this every single day.

Our programmes aren’t just about skills or CVs or career pathways, though all of that matters too. They’re about something that has to come first: a girl who believes she is worth investing in.

When young women are encouraged, mentored, and shown that their potential is real and not theoretical, something shifts. They stop waiting for the world to tell them they’re ready. They start deciding for themselves.

And the ripple effect of that is enormous. A girl who believes in herself doesn’t just change her own life. She changes her family, her community, and her workplace. She becomes the role model that the next girl needs. She gives what she was given. That is the Give to Gain cycle in its fullest, most powerful expression.

You don’t have to wait for permission.

Zendaya didn’t. And neither do you.

Throughout March, we’re honouring every girl who is quietly, bravely learning to trust herself. Every girl navigating spaces that weren’t always built with her in mind. Every girl who is choosing, one day at a time, to back herself anyway.

You don’t have to be Zendaya. You don’t have to be anyone’s idea of remarkable.

You just have to be you. We’ve always believed that’s enough.
