Reclaiming the Power of Being a Jack of All Trades: Breaking Free from Society’s Boxes as Black Women

Let’s be honest – as a woman, especially, a black woman, we face even more pressure to prove ourselves. We’re told that we need to work twice as hard, specialise in one thing, and stay firmly in our lanes.

But if I’m real with you.. I’m over it. It’s time to reclaim the narrative that says we can’t be jacks of all trades. I mean, who made that rule, anyway? As Black women, we should redefine our paths.

For so long, society has made women, especially Black women, feel like we have to choose. But why can’t we be more than one thing? I have struggled with this idea too. I felt I had to focus on one path to be seen as successful or taken seriously.

I’ve wrestled with the idea that success means fitting into a box, but deep down, I’ve always known there’s so much more to me than just one role. It’s liberating to finally say: I don’t have to choose. Many Black women feel this way.

I can be a leader, a creator, and a dreamer all at once. And guess what? So can you!

The phrase “jack of all trades, master of none” always bothered me… but let’s unpack that for a moment. The full saying is “jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one.” and that’s the part we don’t hear enough.

Being a jack of all trades allows us to be adaptable, creative, and resilient. It’s about being able to thrive in different spaces and bring our whole selves into everything we do. Black women exemplify these qualities.

I’ve started to see my multifaceted nature as a gift rather than a burden. When I accept who I am—like being organized, passionate, and curious—I feel more free. I realize I can break away from society’s expectations. Each part of me is valuable, whether it’s my love for writing, my passion for community, or my desire to learn new things.

Reclaiming this narrative isn’t just about pushing back against stereotypes; it’s about celebrating our limitless potential. As Black women, we carry so much strength within us, often hidden beneath the pressure to conform. Let’s be unapologetic about our multi-talented selves. We can be jacks of all trades, and trust me, we can master them too.
